Tuesday night in Cincinnati, Ohio, manager Ned Yost of the Royals will have six of his seven Kansas City Royals available to compete in the 2015 All-Star Game.
Alex Gordon, due to a groin injury, is unable to play and has chosen to stay home and rest, but the remaining six Royals–Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Salvador Perez, Mike Moustakas, Kelvin Herrera, and Wade Davis–will all see the field for the American League All-Stars.
Per usually, each player will likely play somewhere around two innings, with Perez, Escobar, and Cain starting the game. Pitchers may not get as much time on the field, although most teams prefer their starters play no more than an inning or two, depending on their last start for their respective teams.
Herrera and Davis potentially could see multiple innings on the mound.
Over the next two days, Kansas City and the Royals should see plenty of media coverage. With their run to game seven of the World Series a season ago, and currently sitting 18 games over .500 and in first place by 4 1/2 games of the Minnesota Twins, Yosts’ Royals are among the favorites to make it back to the World Series this season.
Fans of other teams around the American League complained that Royals fans stuffed the voting box in order to get their favorite players in the mid-summer classic, but as Ned Yost said, don’t blame the fans or players for the way Major League Baseball has its voting system setup, get online and vote.
By the time voting ended, several of the league’s best players surpassed Royals such as Eric Hosmer and Omar Infante in voting to earn a selection.
Monday night, weather permitting, Cincinnati will host the Home Run Derby, which does not include any Royals competitors, but is a huge draw for fans.
Tuesday, KC fans will be glued to the TV in hopes of seeing their players shine on the national stage. The goal, at the end of the day however, is to keep everyone injury-free and back to Kansas City ready for a second-half run at the playoffs.
A season ago, the Royals entered the break a handful of games back of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, but hit the ground running and on fire to climb back into the face for the division crown.
This season, the Royals are looking to protect a lead and continue playing the AL’s best baseball.
