Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez was honored recently with the prestigious Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. This award is handed out annually by the Phi Delta Theta international fraternity. It goes to the player who best exemplifies the giving character of Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig.

“Salvy is what all of us want baseball and baseball players to be,” said Dayton Moore, Royals President of Baseball Operations. “We often say there isn’t anyone who loves playing baseball more than him, and we’re proud that this award recognizes that nobody enjoys helping people more, too.”

Perez embodies everything you could ever want in a professional athlete, both on and off the field. He’s a future hall of famer, but one could argue that his dedication to the greater good off of the field is what makes him so great.
From hospital visits to providing for young children in his native Venezuela, Perez always gives so much of himself. Simply put, Kansas City is lucky to have Salvador Perez in the organization. Here’s hoping he joins Brett in another category: Life-long Royal!
2022 Season Outlook

With Perez coming off of a career season that saw him blast 48 home runs, expectations for Kansas City are higher than they’ve been since 2016. With a lineup that will include Perez, Whit Merrifield, Adalberto Mondesi and Andrew Benintendi, Kansas City will have a strong veteran presence.
There could also be a youth movement in Kansas City. The Royals could break camp with baseball’s top prospect, Bobby Witt Jr. on the roster.
Kansas City’s pitching staff will also be led by a familiar veteran. Zack Greinke recently signed a one-year deal with Kansas City, and will likely start the season opener.
