With just 4 games left in the regular season, the Kansas City Royals are gearing up for what hopes to be another World Series run.
Wednesday night in Chicago in front of a practically empty stadium, the Royals were taken to the wire yet again before Eric Hosmer homered in the 10th to take the two-run lead and a victory.
With the AL Central locked up and a playoff spot secured, KC is now in a dog-fight with the Toronto Blue Jays for home-field advantage.
The two teams would face off in the ALCS should both advance, and as it stands, the Jays hold a slim one game lead over the Royals with four to play.
With the season coming to a close, Kansas City’s biggest concerns remains with the starting pitching.
None of the starters have been overly dominant, nor consistent enough to make fans feel secure about any one particular pitcher.
Ace, Johnny Cueto, has been up and down throughout his time in Kansas City, but has looked better of late and is likely going to come out as the game 1 starter in the ALDS against the winner of the Wild Card, which is yet to be determined.
While nothing has been solidified as of yet, Cueto was brought to KC to lead the way for the staff, and with that in mind, should get the ball in the opener. Edison Volquez has been maybe the most steady of the starters this season, and Yordano Ventura has looked more like the star from a season ago than at any other point this season, which means Ned Yost will have some decisions to make over the course of the next week.
The Royals close out the season on the road in Minnesota, and will look to put the foot down on the gas pedal a little harder in order to enter the playoffs with some forward momentum.
Center fielder Lorenzo Cain took a shot from a foul tip off his knee, Wednesday, but X-rays came back negative and Cain is expected to play.
It was announced on Thursday afternoon that DH Kendrys Morales has been nominated for comeback player of the year in the American League.
Morales has been a force with the bat for the Royals this season, hitting 22 homers and knocking in 106 RBI’s thus far.
The key for Kansas City is finishing out the regular season unscathed and injury-free, regardless of home field advantage between KC and Toronto, the teams still have to play in a series, and although Toronto has been significantly better at home, the Royals are capable of winning games on the road, so long as they avoid giving up early-inning runs.
