Alex Rios, Kelvin Herrera Battling Chicken Pox

Royals vs. Chickenpox

The Kansas City Royals are battling chickenpox at the wrong time of the year.

It was announced Tuesday that both Alex Rios and Kelvin Herrera are fighting off the chicken pox, a somewhat bizarre illness for a team to face, and at the absolute wrong time of year.

Royals officials said both players could potentially miss up to 2 weeks of action, which at least in Rios’ case, reinforces the idea that acquiring Johnny Gomes is meant for roster depth and to spell lineup regulars.

Kansas City also called up 6 minor league players to begin the process of getting its current players more rest heading into the postseason. September call-ups also serve as a chance for teams to see what some of the younger players can provide without affecting the current standings as much as it ordinarily would. Most teams calling up a higher number of players are more than likely at the bottom of the standings, or sitting with a significant cushion over the rest of the division.

In Kansas City’s case, a 13-game lead in the division and home-field advantage all but locked in, Ned Yost can throw some new faces out there and see what sticks.

Christian Colon was called back along with Cheslor Cuthbert and Francisco Pena. Pitchers Miguel Almonte and Scott Alexander were among those called up, while the team also activated Alex Gordon from the 15-day DL.

Gordon has been recovering from a groin injury, and by all accounts, has played extremely well during his rehab assignment in Omaha.

Rios initially came down with the chicken pox on August 28 when he noticed bumps on his chest. Thought to be bed bugs, trainers and team doctors determined it to be chicken pox and Rios was immediately flown back to Kansas City. Herrera displayed similar symptoms, and was sent back on a chartered flight as well.

Neither players can return to the team until they are free of symptoms.

Ned Yost told reports on Tuesday that the trainers feel as though the outbreak has been contained to the two players and no one else is showing signs.

A home series against the Detroit Tigers begins Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, and is the first of 9 home games for the Royals.
